One of the highlights of the National Folk Festival a few years back was the David Hyams and the Miles To Go Band.
David Hyams plays acoustic, electric and steel guitars as well as mandolin and bouzouki in various musical styles and the band has featured some of Western Australia’s finest musicians, a rhythm section consisting of percussionist Caryn Sullivan alongside Waifs bassist Ben Franz, classical cellist Jennifer Tingley; vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Andy Copeman on cittern, didgeridoo, guitar, vocals and bodhran; until recently the band featured Dougal Adams and Ormonde Waters on various wind instruments, including Irish and Scottish bagpipes.
Now I have to tell you, seeing this band live was awesome. Andy Copeman was a true joy to watch and listen to and seem to inspire the band to take a lot of chances. Great fun.
The Back Of Beyond is a slow and languid piece that displays the musicianship if not the passion of the band. It probably should have been used for the “Chill” section, but it if you close your eyes it will take you to the outback.
There are some shorter samples available at the website. Give a Flat Out Like A Lizard Drinking a listen. It reminds me of the April the 3rd piece that Donal Lunny wrote for the “Bringing It All Back Home” TV series (this is not a bad thing) or early Lunasa in places.
I look forward to catching them next time they pass through Melbourne and check out their “Upcoming Gigs” on their website.
