Ok, I originally was going write Drop Trio up as a Sunday “Chill” piece but I found their groove-oriented keyboard-based funk jazz was more interesting than just chill. This is a trio with feet squarely in the New Orleans funk and Acid jazz camps, and nods to such diverse influences as progressive rock, classical composition and electronica. They sound to me better than most of the music that you can hear as you stroll down Flinders Lane in Melbourne most week nights.

Wreck of The Zephyr is from their 2002 studio album, Big Dipper and even though the Wreck of The Zephyr features a Fender Rhodes (and doesn’t it sound so cool) the band is actually more organ based. All I can say is that I pity the roadies, I have bumped out a Hammond B-3 organ more than once and they are heavy. Why do bands persevere with such archaic (and at times decidedly flaky) instrument.

One reason folks. Once you hear the real thing played by some one who knows what they are doing. You can never look back. Check out Second Chance and see what I mean. Instantly identifiable and dripping with authenticity. They haven’t made a Hammond B-3 since 1975, but musicians still want them and play them.

So with retro instruments at the ready they are taking on the 21st century with style.

Well worth a listen

is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
