Sunday again, for those of you who have been wondering what happened to our “partner in crime” Ian, he has been writing a song for the 3RRR radiothon (where does a year go) that he has to perform this afternoon on the JVG Radio Method. Last heard he was short the last line (don’t you hate that?). So between writing that and his work in the studio, I think that he is a candidate for some “Chill”.

So in an effort to help him stay calm, I think he probably shouldn’t listen to today’s pick. It’s possibly a tad “vigorous” but Nitro Dub sort of just squeaks in. Guitars, digital synths, lush analog synths and a nice ear for a theme. Yummy.

Stargarden IS Bobby DeVito. He started Stargarden and Nitro Dub is from his 1999 release “Ambient Excursions”, ended up in Florida, creating music entirely for the sake of the process (which is an upmarket way of saying “BECAUSE HE CAN”) and the enjoyment of his growing fanbase (add me to that list). His use of tone, repetition, and a beautiful sense of space, creates music that ranges from drifting ambient space music to yummy beat driven electronica. I would put Nitro Dub probably in the middle of that range.

Bobby cites other artists such as Tangerine Dream, Aphex Twin (note to self- review some of these guy’s stuff), Brian Eno, Global Communication, Peter Namlook (Who?) and John Cage as influences on his particular brand of ambient music.

You can find the whole album Ambient Excursions is available up on the ever reliable Magnatune site. (Brad Fuller has written a profile of John Buckman, the founder of Magnatune over at OR’eilly Digital Media . Well worth a read.)

Update: Here is Free Range the song Ian wrote and performed for the 3RRR Radiothon this afternoon.

is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?

  1. hey! thanks for diggin the music. here’s the real story behind that song — i was playing in a bluesband with harmonica player/bandleader philip “nitro” bozeman. i had left the gig the night before in a madd huff, because he had not paid me for the gig yet, and i was tired and wanted to come home. nitro got drunk all night, and left me about five rambling answering machine messages in the morning “bobby…..i got your money…..please bobby….i got your money….”. it begged to be sampled, and i did. on “ambient excursions” there are lots of samples from my daily life on there….mixed really low, you gotta listen :-)

  2. I listened to some more of the album and found a lot more music that was interesting. I Answering machine samples, now there’s an idea. All those telemarketers who start talikng even though it’s obviously an answering machine. I am sure there is some stuff there…. hmmm.

So the big question is… did you go back to the blues band?

I enjoyed the rest of the album as well.
