You may not have heard about Songpull.com but it is another website devoted to developing a community. This time however the focus is live and original music. An idea the should be encouraged.
Songpull is a grassroots project based in original music. What you?ll find is a simple idea involving groups of people getting together to share songs they have written. Songpull.com lets you share in this experience.
The idea is to video record a live performance, either a gig or just in someones loungeroom. You get together a bunch of people who are prepared to perform live and acoustic as individuals or duos at most. All songs must be original and then other people vote.
Songpull have very high expectations and seem to want to control all aspects of the product. I’m keen to find out what kind of Performance and Songpull distribution agreement they have worked out. I’ll update this post when they get back to me.
In the meantime have a listen to and watch Trevor Thornton. Another emo performer without a band (hmm I think that used to be called sensitive singer/songwriter). He says this song was influenced by Travis.

a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.

Hi Jools – thanks for the post. You really hit the nail on the head when you said any idea encouraging original singing and songwriting should be encouraged. At Songpull we’re working hard to build the idea, which really is just about helping regular people have an outlet to write music. We think average people can write some really good music, and we want to encourage that, and help them do it. So by organizing a songpull, which does take a bit of a committment (so does writing a song), we want to give people a format to get those songs together, and a place to share them with other people.
We’ve just posted another round of songs from our own 4th Songpull, and people are having Songpulls in other places, like St. Louis, Johnson City, TN, Sonoma County, CA, etc. And the best part is there is some REALLY AMAZING music coming out of them. I won’t embed it here, but Dan Fritz does a good job of explaining it in an interview before his song here: songpull.com/songpulls/springfield4_dan_fritz.php.
Cheers
