Beolach - Cape Breton music

Beolach comes from Cape Breton Nova Scotia. A band featuring piano, pipes, whistles, guitar, bango and fiddles. Their music is a blend of tunes from Cape Breton, Ireland and Scotland and also includes a number of original compositions.

BEOLACH is a Gaelic word meaning ‘lively youth’. Beolach is also one of Cape Breton’s most exciting new young bands.

Lovely tunes, skillfully arranged, well recorded and delightfully executed. Their talent does not end there however as they step dance too. This is a style of traditional dance where the footwork is the focus.

I’m a tad confused because the website describes them as a six piece band yet I count but five. Wendy Mac Isaac on Fiddle, Banjo and Stepdance, Mairi Rankin on Fiddle and Stepdance, Ryan J. MacNeil on Pipes and Whistles, Mac Morin on Keyboard, Piano, Accordion and Stepdance and Patrick Gillis on Guitar.

Sadly they have only provided samples from their albums, but it is enough to give you an idea of the depth of their music. The recordings are a worthy addition to any collection of contemporary folk.

jools is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.
