Another sleepy Sunday and this week we travel to the west coast of America, and listen to Tycho. I have chosen a “live” track that he recorded a while ago. There are a few albums worth of material on his website and it is all seriously well done. The sound is essentially a lazy instrumental with a carefully scuplted beat moving it along, lots of really old Eighties synth sounds (love ‘em) and the odd church organ and the ever present vocal samples all peeking around the corners waiting to leap out and ambush you.

Hansen has been quoted saying…

“I just want to bring a psychedelic experience where [listeners] can just chill out at home with friends, it?s not exactly party music; it’s more of an atmosphere.”

Atmosphere it has, and plenty of it.

Hansen got into music almost by accident after he scored a broken drum machine and a sequencer. After joining the dot-com boom (the first one) as a Web designer, (this explains a lot about his website) he eventually ended up assembling a home studio. He performs live with a laptop and along with Chachi Jones, Dusty Brown, Fruitbat, and Park Avenue formed the Command Collective, a group of musicians and visual artists who defined the electronic music scene of Sacramento, CA in the early 2000’s.

There are also some pieces over at www.myspace.com/tycho and he is also known as graphic artist ISO50, Hansen’s design portfolio can be found at ISO50.com

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
