I have yet to read a revue or article on the Wagons (including the bands bio) that didn’t draw a parallel with Johnny Cash in the first sentence, so I will faithfully observe tradition.
There are immediate similarities, the odd song of death, the baritone voice (couple of sizes tighter in the undies) and the urban country feel —- but while the influences are obvious the sound is definitely their own.
Based in Melbourne, the band gigs frequently and is well worth the cost of a tram ride.
The track chosen here is “Man Sold” from their “Draw Blood” album, good production and plenty of space for the song to show it’s colours.
Live, the Wagons are a different thing again. The between song banter of singer songwriter Henry Wagons can be worth the ticket alone, which depending on the night is somewhere between MacBeth, Ustinov, Zig, Greer, Spalding Gray and Andrew Bolt — no make that Deryn Hinch.
The band is equally impressive. They have presence, assert their individual personalities and have the much sort after but rarely achieved bit of genuine mongrel. As with many bands at the moment, their web loyalties are divided.
Their bio, pics and a couple of tracks off their current album etc can be found on their own website www.wagonsmusic.com but their gig guide and a more comprehensive music cache is available at www.myspace.com/wagonsmusic
Physically Henry may resemble the director of Lord of the Rings but musically the sentiment is far closer to Lord of the Flies.
Enjoy the tracks, but see them live.
