Calling Mission Mu - Coda - album cover

This is a Sydney outfit Coda have been gigging since 1974 1994. Their music is textured and alluring, aggressive and certainly not predictable. They look and sound like a youthful group of art students, but in fact they are all seasoned performers and trained musicians, playing a blend of music which defies categorisation (although I’ll give it my best shot). A mix of violins and electronica meets pulsing grooves.

Nick Wales on Viola, Keyboards and Electronics, Naomi Radom on Violin and Melodica, Jared Underwood on Drums and Octapad, Oliver Smith on Bass and Bree Van Reyk on Vibraphone and Percussion make up this performance group who combine visual and performance art into their musical act.

On their flash website you can hear the new album Calling Mission Mu and also their older material too. There is something here for everyone in this eclectic melee. One of the more accessible tracks from the new album is Superpod. It would be too easy to write Coda off as pretentious were it not that they’re not at all bad. Worth a listen.

jools is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.

  1. since 1974 ? I think you mean since 1994. Coda weren’t even BORN in 1974 I suspect.
I was around in 1974 & I don’t remember Coda doing any concerts then folks.
Perhaps Aleph were the best prog-rock band of the 70′s, but Coda are the best of the 90′s and 2000′s.

  2. Oops.

Thanks for that Brian, you are of course correct I did mean to type in 1994 but sometimes the old fingers don’t go where they are supposed to.

I honestly don’t remember Aleph, were they a Sydney band? Time for a quick trip to Goggle I think.
