Another find courtesy of the the tartanpodcast Sleepy Sunday (thanks Mark). Memory Man is the first track of Uncle Fritz’s (aka Fraser Stewart) sold out first album “Nine Songs”. It’s a beautifully evocative piece, just a guitar and some samples (gliss keyboard?). I really love this, it took me quite by surprise given the darkness that seems to pervade the rest of the material. Have a listen to “If I Had A Shotgun” on the myspace site. Uncle Fritz delves deep into the murky stuff, writing about murder, hate, drug addiction, isolation, physical violence. The border conditions of life but the songs are sustained by beautiful melodies that create a fairly disturbing duality.

Here is a bunch of stuff from the Piranha Records site

Uncle Fritz is just one of the alter egos belonging to 24 year-old Fraser Stewart, the talented painter and musician hailing from the Scottish city of Dundee.

Since releasing his debut LP, Nine Songs through the Pet Piranha Records label in 2005, Uncle Fritz’s music has been met with critical acclaim from the Scottish underground scene and through appearances at Aberdeen’s GO North and Glasgow’s Musicworks festivals…

So as well a playing pretty guitar and writing dark songs he also plays bass in Alamos a fairly full on power trio and fronts a hardcore metal band called Perineum, have a listen to “Something Is Terrible“. Both bands are pretty full on and don’t tend to be stopping for prisoners.

If you find that the music appeals you can download the first album “Nine Songs” from a link on the Piranha Records site and it’s about 37M and in a RAR archive (The open source program 7-zip should be able to open it).

My verdict? Worth the investment.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
