The Meredith Festival is on next weekend here in Victoria (who can believe that it’s been running for 16 years… time does fly etc) and if you didn’t buy your tickets a few months back, trust me, you are way too late. But as I cast my eye down the list of performers (Rose Tattoo?, the Drones, Augie March ) I noticed that Spencer P. Jones and the Escape Committee are going to close out the weekend (makes sense… they are a hard act to follow).
You may not recognise the name but over the past 20 years or so Spencer has been a constant in the Australian music scene, from early THE EMOTIONAL RETARDS and CUBAN HEELS, to the hilarious psychedelic cabaret of THE NORTH 2 ALASKANS or the gold status cowpunk incontinence of THE JOHNNYS there’s more. Spencer is more widely know as a founding member / guitarist with THE BEASTS OF BOUBON and as an occasional sideman to PAUL KELLY.
“These Days” is a track I first heard on Triple J a while back and it managed to get stuck in my head for quite a while, some days I wonder why I bother to carry an MP3 player when music like this get stuck in your brain (the voices in my head?). I loved the horn arrangement and the guitars, especially the “Neil Youngesque” solo in the middle.
Anyway there is some more material to listen to available at his record company site www.spookyrecords.com/Spencer%20P.%20Jones.html and he has a few gigs down here in Melbourne (The Tote on the 18 Dec 2006 ) in a week or so.
thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
