Dan Warner’s first taste of success came with The Warner Brothers (became Overnight Jones after Time/Warner took exception to their name) a band he formed with Paul Stewart in Melbourne in the late 1980′s resulting in four albums and a handful of singles.
During the 1990′s Dan teamed up with guitarist Al MacInnes performing simply as Dan & Al, building a large and dedicated following and establishing several long term residencies including four years at both The Great Britain and The Punter’s Club and seven years at The Corner Hotel in Richmond, where the front bar was renamed in Dan’s honour.
The duo parted ways after two albums when Dan moved to New York in 2000, but even today their annual December reunion shows draw sell out crowds.
Dan briefly teamed with American guitarist Kevin Garant to form Dan & Kev resulting in one album before releasing his first serious solo effort in 2005 (A Likeness of You).
The album rightly received gushing reviews both in Australia and overseas and some mainstream exposure (notably ABC Radio and Rage) but little support from commercial media, which as we all know is turning in ever decreasing musical circles.
It’s a pity because “A Likeness of You” is brilliant! It ventures through many musical styles from urban folk, through pop to strong, earthy ballads and is equally strong musically, vocally and lyrically.
Dan is currently in the studio recording a new album due for release later this year. There is plenty of info to be found on Dan’s website but to listen his material you will need to select the link to his myspace page.
Dan can also be heard most Sundays on Melbourne’s RRR where he has a segment titled Warner Corner on “The JVG Radio Method” (Sundays 2-4pm)
