Today I felt that it was time to do something a little scary and have one of our sporadic drive-bys of the jazz scene and todays victim er… musician is a drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and Palmetto recording artist Matt Wilson (busy dude huh?). He was also one of the featured artist on the Napster Freebies page a week or so back which is where I stumbled across him.

If you don’t like jazz and I’m afraid we aren’t talking stuff you can hum along too here although you can tap your foot along with it, today might be a “bumpy ride”. But for me the stick work and the control that the whole band exhibits is a winning combination… and when the the trumpet really fires up around 3 minutes in I can see the less adventurous reaching for the mouse to turn it off, and that’s a pity.

As a bandleader, his infectious creative spirit allows his band and the audience to share in the excitement of the moment. He is not afraid to challenge, entertain and have fun! (You’ll have fun too!) Since moving to New York in 1992, Wilson has established himself as one of the most imaginative jazz artists of his generation. He has performed on over 160 recordings and has toured throughout the world. He was voted Jazz Drummer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2003 and for the past three years has been voted ..1 Rising Star Drummer in the Downbeat International Critics Poll as well as prominent mentions in the Jazz Artist and Composer categories. All I can say is give it a go, it’s one of those pieces that you might find yourself revisiting now and then.

Before you know it you’ll be browsing fotr John Coltrane box sets. Or possibly not.
