Fisher King is an atypical Greg Ashley song from his recent album “Painted Garden”, in this song it sounds like he is channelling some 50′s lounge lizard. But the production gives him away, it is meticulously relentless.
The rest of the album reveals some dark undertones and more wonderful textures and production. I really like this guy. He is plugged in to American music, the influences as wide ranging and eclectic as mine (and I listen to nearly everything I can). From finger picking folk to extreme jazz and everything in between Greg distills and refines these to give an original take on “Americana”.
A bit from the Birdman Records site…
While being more warm and intimate than last year’s Gris Gris wonder For The Season, it still reflects the same vision behind the band’s greatness. Partially written in a burnt out ghetto in Oakland, partially written in his remote cabin in Kosse, TX, Painted Garden was completely produced and written by Ashley (except for half of one song, which was co-written by an Oakland chanteuse) and 80% completely played by him as well. This record is an example of a true vision realized, and puts Ashley right up there with the great musical minds of the day.
There is a great album review over at boomkat.com
Here is a great piece of guerrilla video of “Sailing With Bobby”.

fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
