I will be honest and say that it has taken me a while to come to grips with Niamh Parsons as a singer. The problem is with me, I think it is because at times she reminds me of Sandy Denny, click on the myspace link and have a listen to “The Briar and The Rose” and tell me I am wrong.

But her rendering of “Clohinne Winds” from her 1997 album is just brilliant. It has the qualities that I treasure in songs that I find myself remembering after 30 years, The North Star Grassman And The Ravens would be a good comparison and realising that most of you aren’t going to have a copy of that album lying around, here is Sandy Denny performing The North Star Grassman And The Ravens from over at YouTube…

The reason that this is all a bit confused, is that I have had a copy of Sandy Denny’s Box Of Treasures CD and Niamh Parsons “Loosely Connected” CD on my MP3 player for the last month or two and with the shuffle on, sometimes I have to look to see what I am looking at, and find my self pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s Niamh Parsons.

has racked up six studio albums and one live album ( a ripper) to date, and for the last seven or so years has been playing in a duet with Graham Dunne. He is a hell of a guitarist have listen to “Jenny Picking Cockles” at the myspace site.

UPDATE: Feb 2008 Niamh currently has a copy of “Crazy Man Michael” that she mentions in the comments up on her MySpace Site. It’s a home recording and it’s glorious.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?

  1. Hi – thanks for the compliments (I think you meant them as compliments)…… I never heard Sandy Denny until well after I had learnt about 50 songs – I’ve been singing and learning traditional songs since I was 8……. of course at the age of 30, when I discovered Sandy Denny she blew my mind, and I’ve tried to stay clear of her songs because I think nobody could sing some things better than she could…… however some songs just need to be sung……. I recorded Banks of the Nile in 1999 and recently I’ve been singing Crazy Man Michael because it’s a great song…… Anyway nice to find that you appreciate Graham as much as I do – http://www.myspace.com/grahamdunne
