“Paranoia in Bb Minor”… I ask you how could you walk past a song title like that. It conjours up death metal, gothic, epic, huge, terrifying scenarios that runaway cascade through your mind at the speed of light, you press play all ready to be blown away and then the banjo starts. BANJO…. Excuse me A BANJO?, so now you have had one of those life lessons, two actually.

Lesson one. Press play first then let your mind be taken away and lesson two?

The Avett Brothers are pretty fine songwriters (the missing death metal gothic epic stuff not withstanding). Here we have an american folk rock outfit that is carrying forward a traditon that has been misplaced and overlooked until recently. Listen carefully and you can hear early Byrds, maybe some Everly Brothers and all that came after them. Tight vocals, passion, good guitars, passion oh yeah did I mention passion? I thought so.

I like these guys, well worth a listen.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
