Track Name: The Frog Threw His Head Back And Laughed or Song of the Open Road (it’s too hard to make up my mind)
Playback: mp3
Download?: Yes

Categorising music is so bloody difficult. I tend to mainly to work from the “feel” method, you know the stuff that sort of leaps out, smacks you around the head a few times and yells “Pay Attention” at you. But then there are the sly pieces that sneak up beside you (carelessly looking inconspicuous) and they hang around until you stumble over them. By then they are so familiar that you think they have been there forever.
And then there is music like Jenny Scheinman makes… an amalgam of Gypsy jazz, blues and god knows what else. Today’s two tracks are from her 2005 album “12 Songs” and both are amazing. Not the sort of thing you will find humming but it is the sort of stuff that will leave you thinking.
Ironically for an al bum called “12 Songs”, there are no vocals or lyrics. There are great and accessible melodies and the playing just goes for the emotional jugular. These songs will pick you up and take you on a journey of exploration and discovery.
On the amazing “Song of the Open Road”, the violin and cornet are playing a waltz that wouldn’t be out place in Vienna. Meanwhile the guitar is playing an early Larry Coryell styled guitar riff and the bassist and the drums (wonderfully understated) are just tying it all together.
Very, very highly recommended.
I found a great background interview over at All about Jazz and to finish off here ia clip of Jenny playing live…
This is really interesting stuff.

fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
