All those people out there who have heard about Simon Webbe, please sit on your hands for the duration. Yes, Yes I know, where have I been all this time and what bush have I been living under, etc. Give me credit, I did come across him at last.
It is true to say I think that we have not heard the last of him despite the fact that his second solo album (which by the way is the stronger in terms of song writing in my estimation) only reached number 11 on the British pop charts – no mean feat given that it didn’t get very much support or airplay.
Okay, he was born in Manchester England and he sang with the British boy-band, “Blue”. Their career began in 2001 and ended in 2004. Simon has written two albums worth of songs since then and, not to put too fine a point on it, the package is slick, the music is fine, the production polished and detail cannot be faulted. There is a third album in the wings, soon I hope.
A smooth warm voice that melts more than cockles, that underpins his lyrics and excellent pop melodies, there is no lack of talent here.
Webbe’s urban folk-tinged single “Lay Your Hands” hit the airwaves and reached number four on the U.K. singles charts. The song “No Worries” followed, also reaching number four, priming the market for the release of Webbe’s solo debut, Sanctuary. The record’s alternative, rootsy style surprised and charmed audiences. Though it debuted at number 28, the record quickly climbed to number seven. The much anticipated follow-up release, Grace, was met with success in November of 2006, and peaked at number 11. With a strong fan base throughout Europe and Asia and a busy touring schedule, Webbe has an international reputation that continues to flourish. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, All Music Guide
His official website features samples from all of his tracks and he has generously also provided lyrics as well. I’ve recommended the uptempo gospel inspired Coming Around Again from the MySpace site as a place to start listening. If you aren’t hooked by the end of the track – try out the vids below and then try to get away with your wallet unscathed. I dare you.
