While rummaging around in the RTE Late Session SIte for last weeks post on Sarah McQuaid I noticed a band called Grada. The name rang a bell, and then I remebered that they were here in Australia for The National Folk Festival and a friend or two had been raving about how good they were.

They weren’t wrong if the music over at MySpace is anything to go on. The bring to mind the same deftness of touch, as say Flook or Fine Friday. Have a listen to “Shock On” or “Pint Of Reference” and you will see what I mean. Some very fine playing here, filler flute and really nice guitar and very clever arrangements. Really yummy.

Here is some stuff from the website…

Gráda are based in Dublin and Galway, Ireland, where they began playing together in 2001. The group draws from a wide range of influences, which has seen them working with Dave Hingerty (ex Frames drummer, now working a lot with Josh Ritter); Vyviene Long (cellist with Damien Rice); and, as a producer, Trevor Hutchinson (Lúnasa, Sharon Shannon, The Waterboys). Further additions have included Dublin based trumpeter Bill Blackmore, and Danish percussionist extraordinaire, Rasmus Skovmund

And if you are interested, you can listen to the RTE Late Session were Gerry Paul and Alan Dohertytalk about their new album, ‘Cloudy Day Navigation’, they are on in the second hour. Keep in mind that this is a recording of a radio show so there are the news breaks and a few other interesting musical selections in the two hours as well.

I will be making sure I get myself along the next time they are out here.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
