OK so it’s official, God likes pop. Well if the Maccabees are anything to go by.
I’ll whack the quote from the website here…
The Maccabees first formed under the name Dissident Prophet way back in 1994 out of the ashes of a number of bands in Birmingham. Tom Livemore (now of Carina Round fame) and Andy Jennings met while in their own secular bands, Doodlebug and Hector’s House, but after Andy’s conversion they both knew that Jesus had different plans. At a Hector’s House reunion gig, Andy met John Large (drums) and Simon Smith (bass) of the Pink Dandelions. Things moved quickly from this point on and without a name they played their first gig as support to Iona at the Irish Centre. One more gig at the Flapper and Firkin resulted in the band being signed to new Birmingham label MGL.
and so on.
Seriously though, apart from having God on their side (that Bob Dylan doco was on a week or two back), this wonderfully English band bring to mind XTC in full flight. There isi a tight feel to both the playing and the lyrics, dare we say the slick word? I found myself coming back to them during the week, it really is good stuff. The BBC has some footage of the Maccabees Live, you will need Real Audi to play but it’s worth it. They are a killer band live.
Here is “Precious Time” over at youTube.

fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
