About Beirut from their website…
a trumpet from Paris, farfisa organ, accordion, piano, ukelele, mandolin, glockenspiel, violin, cello, tambourine, The air powered organ I bought on twelth street, Congo drum donated from the neighbors….A broken microphone stolen from the university of new mexico…. premier LP Gulag Orkestar available now, via badabingrecords.com, or at your local record store.
Do you get the feeling that they aren’t taking their 15 minutes seriously? Well actually they are, but that doesn’t mean they cant have a ton of fun at the same time. This band just bring a smile to my face every time I hear them.
Klezmer meets mariachi meets The Bonzos meets half the buskers you have ever hear at the bottom of the cavernous entrance to the railway station (yep, that’s right, the dude with the accordian… it’s like they all have to get one.
Trains? Check.
Rails? Check?
Annoying Accordian Player? Check.
But I digress. Check).
Where was I? oh yes Zach Condon , he’s the ringmaster of this particular outfit and it its his voice that ties it all together. It’s a chaotic mix of sounds and instruments, with layers and layers of sound, but it really does lift you up. Now I know that they are unlikely to get commercial airplay (although I am happy to be proved wrong) and it is seriously unlikely that Rick Rubin over at Columbia is going to sign them up but it really doesn’t matter. They make albums and Ba Da Bing records and 4AD make sure we get to hear them and that’s what counts in the long run.
Over at the Beirut website there is a great little tune available for download called “A Sunday Smile”
Don’t miss it.
