Resisting the urge to start with looking all the jokes about accordion players (and drummers think they have a tough time), Sharon Shannon is atotally amazing musician. Jools and I caught her at the Brunswick music Festival a couple of years back and were mesmerised. She gets sounds out of the accordion that I for one didn’t know were there. This was my main reason for going I figured if I heard her live I could figure out how she does it. I did… it’s pure talent.
“The Maid Behind The Bar” is a really good introduction to her music I think, it is based in the “tradition” without being stuck there. Even if I actually thought that it was a Capercaillie track at first. The groove underlying the track is so beguiling.
Her new album has an amazing gust list, lets face it she has collaborated with everyone from Nigel Kennedy to Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello & The Waterboys.
Mike Scott, Steve Wickham and Sharon Shannon play a blistering set of jigs in Waterford, Ireland, 2004
To support the new album she is on tour with Mike McGoldrick on flute and whistles, Dezi Donnelly on violin and Jim Murray on guitar. If you are in Melbourne Sharon is playing the East Brunswick Club on Saturday 13th October.
Have a look at Mundy and Sharon playing Galway Girl… bloody aamazing.
thatch is
fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
