Well with a name like “Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin” I just had to have a look. It’s a killer name (sorry) but I am glad I went and had a listen. Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin is essentially Morgan Caris. He plays guitrs, sings, writes basically everything. There is an abridged bio were you can read all about how he got here over at the website.
Morgan has been writing and recording songs for a while now, some of which have been released on LPs and compilations mostly in Spain and Japan (beats me), he was also a member of the Loons, but the recently released “Hapless” is the first solo album of his to see daylight.
Listening to “Lay Down Your Arms”, the ambience and delivery reminds you of Leonard Cohen or Tom Rapp. The string arrangements especially take me back to the “Use of Ashes” by Pearls Before Swine.
The soft and delicate melodies, quiet guitars and sparse uncluttered arrangements arrangements allow the words to shine. And they are very clever and in places very dark. This song will hang around on the MP3 player for a while and challenge your listening.
Not to be missed. Highly recommended.
