VANDAVEER is songsmith Mark Charles Heidinger and here is a quote…
Grace & Speed, Vandaveer’s debut record, entered this great big world in March 2007 via DC’s Gypsy Eyes Records, earning stellar reviews and repeated comparisons to Donovan, Dylan, Drake, Waits, and scores more.
Now the Tom Waits and Nick Drake thing is ably represented by today’s choice “Marianne You’ve Done It Now”, a dark and a bit disturbing song. Don’t be put off by that, it is a great song, cleverly arranged and seriously well performed but lyrically there is quite a bit to digest. Probably not a song you are going to walk away “whistling in the wind”.
Now head to the MySpace site and have a listen to “However Many Takes It Takes”… what do yo think? I can see why people immediately head for Donovan as a comparison. This is a much jollier song, with a really pretty guitar part. What I really like is the vocals sound as though he is sitting next to you and I am pretty sure that there is absolutely no treatment or tricks on the voice ( and he isn’t “fashionably flat”, that alone makes it worth buying in my book).
What both these songs have in common is that there is a story that you will find yourself caring about. In another age I feel sure he would have been a troubadour, and come to think of it that is probably what he is today.
I like this… a lot. Highly Recommended
