“Shortwave Dahlia” are a cool trio form Memphis, Tennessee who manage to jam together a great pop sensibility with samples, electronics and other toys. Yes, well spotted young padawan this is the band I mentioned in last weeks piece on Goat .
Here is some stuff from the website…
Jack Alberson (voice, synths, programs, and occasional guitar) founded the group as a solo venture in 2004. With the addition of bassist Mark Simmonds shortly after the release of SD’s first fiull-length (Illuminated), the music evolved and began to accommodate influences as broad as film music, trip-hop and jazz. Guitarist and programmer Paul Blanda joined in the fall of 2006 and a strong undercurrent of ethereal rock asserted itself in the mixture.
So what makes these guys worth three minutes of your time? Well they’re fun. They rip through ideas at a great rate of knots, the sounds bring to mind The Cure and New Order meet The Church in a DIY electronics junkyard. I really love the orchestral scope of “Song For Vara” overlayed with circuit bent noises and really interesting vocals.
Basically lot of fun, you shouldn’t miss them.
There is a free download (or two) over at Last FM.
