We have been digging the net since June 4th 2006 to find the musical gems buried within and today we bring you Duggup’s 500th post. Suffice to say we have listened to lots of music during that time and personally I have found it an entertaining, horizon broadening time and sometimes hard work.

Thatch has always taken on the lion’s share (appropriate for a Leo), even taking over my slots from time to time when assignments were due. For this I thank him.

Many years ago, as I worked, I listened to local community radio stations 3PBS and 3RRR. Much of what they played was not my taste, but I have become more appreciative of what was available and I found that I was able to enjoy a vast range of music styles.

I still listen to music everyday as I work and my music tastes have broadened even more in these last couple of years as I listen to everything from hard core through to classical.

Each of the musicians that we have featured in our posts has had something worthy of listening to and while some may not appeal to everybody – there is heaps here that will.

Duggup is about to undergo a few changes shortly – so stay tuned. I’ve designed a new logo which is much more in keeping with what this website is about – music.

Additionally we are working up a new format for the site. We hope to have a few surprises ready by the time we relaunch. More interviews and more music reviews.

So today in celebration of our 500th post and the long awaited and welcome change in Australia’s government, Thatch and I are listing our TOP 10 faves so far.

First we will hear from the numerically challenged Thatch, in no particular order.

Jools asked for 10 faves for our 500th post.

Bloody hard, so I looked at the MP3 player to see what was there 18 months after we started

Chill:Rob Costlow – Meant To Be Gorgeous solo piano

Tryad – Final Rewind
Mashup techno and standard bearers of creative commons

We haven’t really done much jazz but three artists are still there
Jenny Scheinman
Gypsy jazz, blues and god knows what else

David Torn – Structural Functions of Prezens
I love indie pop but sometimes you need something with some real substance.

Hiromi Uehara
This woman rekindled my interest in fusion, there are three tracks still on the MP3 player

Now onto the really difficult bit
Thea Gilmore
The live recordings of Contessa and Darling are just so cool.

Finniston
My fascination with Scottish Bands continues unabated.

The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song
Iconoclastic American indie band, still intriguing me.

Madviolet – Skylight
I managed to hear a live to air of them from the National Folk festival, looking forward to their next tour

The Plagiarists – The Breeze
Lots of yummy guitars.

Oh I just found this one … as Nigel said “eleven’s better than ten innit? I mean it’s one more, it has to be better”
Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek
This women’s work is just compelling. I heard her over two years ago and still get a smile when she shows up on the player.

And believe it or not Evermore’s Running is still there.
Thatch

Ok, now it’s my turn but unlike Thatch, my choices are more limited because my input has not been as high. So in no particular order my favourites are as follows:

Baby Gramps

duggup.com.au/2006/11/09/baby-gramps/

What an act – foot stomping bearded dude with attitude. Great stuff.

Susuma Hirasawa

duggup.com.au/2007/03/09/susuma-hirasawa/

This terrific Japanese pop transports me.

Sulpher Children

Sadly the now defunct indie band Sulpher Children can still be found here.

Clann An Drumma

duggup.com.au/2007/06/16/clann-an-drumma/

Drums and bagpipes – need I say more?

Keith Murray

duggup.com.au/2007/07/14/keith-murray/

Hip hop poetry at its finest.

Felix Riebl

duggup.com.au/2007/09/01/felix-riebl-cat-empire/

Australian and they have political savvy and great songs.

Oh Laura

duggup.com.au/2007/10/22/0h-laura/

Swedish band with a great voice upfront and a killer band.

The Paperboys

duggup.com.au/2007/10/29/the-paperboys/

Canadian band with mixed influences. Very good band and melodic songs.

B-Side Players

duggup.com.au/2007/10/08/b-side-players/

A great voice and a terrific reggie band with a difference.

Abra Moore

duggup.com.au/2007/07/06/abra-moore-very-pretty/

What can I say that I haven’t already about this musician? Highly recommended.

Jools

is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.
