If you have not yet had the opportunity to learn of the wit of Tim Minchin, now is your chance. West Australian born and now living in London, he has a wicked knowing smile, wild eyes and even wilder hair that obscure a keen partly self taught musician/composer and a man with an irreverant sense of the absurd.
Pianist, comedian, cabaret artist, actor, singer, (pretend wannabe rock star) and well, really all round odd bloke. he reminds me of a manga cartoon character but in his own words taken from an interview with Tim in Sheffield U.K.
Well I don’t know how good I am at any one of those things. I think the reason it’s going ok for me is because I do them all. I mean I’m a good musician for a comedian and I’m a good comedian for a musician but if I had to do any of them in isolation I dunno. Acting’s the next thing I’m gonna have to test because I’m more failed as an actor than in any other genre; I’ve consistently not got acting work. But I am going to make this film so if I’m bad at it …
And then:
I’m very happy that I’ve managed to get a career by doing the things that come most naturally to me rather than compromising anything. It’s interesting to me that after all these years of trying to be an actor and all these things, that the thing that gave me minor celebrity status was just doing exactly what I wanted to on stage. That’s a great thing to be able to say that you do whatever you want and that’s what you’re most successful at.
Tim Minchin’s career is beginning to rev up – he has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival and been the recipient of the coveted Perrier Prize for best newcomer. He has performed in Canada and the US and late in 2007 he will make his feature debut in Two Fists, One Heart, a drama filmed and set in Perth, WA.
His deadpan expressions and pointed smirks make his performance complete. You need to see his face as he performs and his humour is often laugh right loud funny. His songs can be clever and rude and funny and sad and probably all of the above. I first heard him on the ABC Sideshow. If you are looking for an idea for a Christmas present for someone you know won’t be easily offended – because that’s what he does best, you could do worse than giving them a copy of his DVD So Live.
Let’s see, at random, have a listen to Angry and then watch the video clip of Canvas Bags made for the BBC’s “Comedy Shuffle”
