British Sea Power are a four-man indie rock band based in Brighton, England. They have been around since 2000, released their first single in 2001, they released their first album in 2003 and their third album is due out early next year.

Their style ranges from the sweeping, often epic, guitar pop sound to the visceral and angular. Critics have likened their sound to a variety of groups, from The Cure and Pixies to The Cult and The Mission. They have most often been compared to Joy Division.

I think we should have a quick look at some British Sea Power live footage and just see about that….

OK! I’m impressed. The video is of their set closing “Rock In A”, a somtimes 20 minute jam that is exhausting just to watch.

There is a lot of humour in this band and it’s material, “Favours in the Beetroot Fields” and “Atom” also show a lot of what is likeable, turn the volume up to eleven and let it rip.

Recommended. (as are earplugs if you are lucky enough to see them live)

is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?

  1. I just spotted a live concert recording over at WXPN/NPR World Cafe show

They start out with “Lights Out for Darker Skies” and just rage through a killer 40 minute set.
