This is embarrassing but I have no idea how I found “Birch Book”. This isn’t a problem but usually I can tell you where I spotted the band name or song that grabbed me. This one… totally clueless. But we aren’t here to talk about my memories shortcomings we are here to chat about a “Sleepless Search”.

This is such a gentle piece, I find it surprising that it has survived on my MP3 player (it has a high attrition rate of slower pieces). The recording of the vocals is so up close and personal that it is a compelling performance.

‘Birch Book’ is a mainly one-man project of B’eirth, or simply “Bee”, the music is tied back to an English psych-folk tradition (think Nick Drake or Donovan). There is a truly timeless quality to the recording though, Bee’s guitar playing is tightly controlled all the emotion is in the voice. The other instrument on this piece are mixed so far back ass to be nearly invisible.

Do have a listen, it’s a surprising piece. The material on the myspace site is a lot more “up”, “How The Hours” is a fave. And I should mention that his influences listed on the MySpace site reads like a chunk of my music collection.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
