The Outside Track

Let’s continue with the vaguely acoustic theme for a bit more this week. The Outside Track are a five piece band from Limerick Ireland. The band fired up in 2005 at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, where they were students and are now based in Edinburgh. The lineup consists of flute, harp, fiddle, piano, guitar, accordion and vocals (lots of vocals) and this band has talent to burn.

The Lonesome Hen is a song that displays their vocal talent, lots of yummy harmonies (5 part harmonies?) and drop dead wonderful phrasing, and then the instruments kick in and you are just transported away. This is fabulous playing, the band listens to each other and the dynamics seem to be natural rather than mixed. I would truly love to see these guys play live.

I was listening to “Patrick Street” recently and was blown away by just how good the players were. After listening to “The Outside Track” I think that they needn’t worry about the tradition too much, it seems to be in good hands.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
