Simone Dinnerstein – Bach Goldberg Variations

It’s a pity that there is a Writer’s Strike in the USA, because here is a fabulous story that would make a feel good movie as only Hollywood can make them and it would come with it’s own soundtrack.
The Story So Far
Simone Dinnerstein records her solo debut CD in March 2005 at the auditorium of the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York bankrolled by some friends.
In November 2005, she performed the complete Goldberg Variations on a self-produced Carnegie Hall concert recital debut bankrolled by some more friends
In 2006 Simone Dinnerstein was a piano teacher in Brooklyn.
In 2007 she has had a major feature written about her in the New York Times, lands on the the front page of Slate.com, has a segment on NPR’s Morning Edition, her self produced CD is picked up by Telarc and to round out the year the CD out charted the White Stripes album.
And she is a classical pianist. Head over to her website at www.myspace.com/simonedinnerstein or www.simonedinnerstein.com and you can hear what the fuss is about.
If you aren’t up on classical piano (and trust me I’m no expert… I just have patient friends who explain stuff to me… over and over again. Hi Bill) the deal seems to be that
- You record them at the end of your career after you have had a lifetime of playing to “expose the nuances of Baroque” hiding in the music Bach wrote.
- In 1955, Glenn Gould did the definitive recording and you needn’t really bother trying to beat it (hers doesn’t sound like his at all)
You need to hear this stuff, yes even if you prefer hi speed deathmetal grunge, you need to hear this stuff. The last time I borrowed the Glenn Gould recording (the 1955 not the 1981) I was totally captivated with but Simone Dinnerstein takes this music to a different place altogether. Play the Aria from the MySpace site (it’s the second listed track) and just listen to what one person, some metal strings and big wooden box can create. Just wonderful.
Highly Recommended
There is also a great interview with Simone over at eMusic

fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
