Dirty Projectors – Rise Above
By thatch • Jan 25th, 2008 • Category: Alternative, MusicDirty Projectors is the working name of Dave Longstreth, and they are my latest find in that category I like to call “Hard Listening”. The band tends to explore the limits with truly distinctive arrangements of both lo-fi and hi-fi production.
In 2007, Dirty Projectors released “Rise Above”, which is an album of Black Flag songs as re-imagined Dave’s memory. The actual track “Rise Above” you can hear at the MySpace site myspace.com/dirtyprojectors, its a mixture of understated guitar playing, a chorus of female voices and a solid back beat and soaring vocals that have more to-do with soul than punk.
The Dirty Projectors’ songs are full of a multitude of complexly arranged elements, it’s just that it sometimes feels like the whole band has ADD. So just when you think you can see what’s going on, they “zag left” and you are left wondering…, their best trick of course is that cleverness doesn’t seem all that obvious as they oscillate from chaos to catchy.

fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
