Whitley is the name that Melbourne musician Lawrence Greenwood goes by. Whitley plays a fusion of electronica and folk which has been labeled as Folktronica or laptop folk by the music media. The story goes that he was lured away from his previous hardcore and punk background after attending an alternative country gig. He began listening to more traditional country music and incorporated these new musical influences into his music.

His live gigs are supplemented by fellow musicians Andy Reed on drums, Alex Hunter on pedal steel and electric guitar, John Sweeney on computers, Luke and Chris Bolton on bass. He started writing songs and the result is the “Submarine” album that was released back in September 2007.

The songs are prettily crafted and have a delicacy that comes from the breathy vocals but there is something about the songs – I’m not sure what it is – perhaps they are too short, but they leave you wanting to hear more.

Take the latest single “A Shot From The Stars”. Delightfully textured and supported by a great looking video.

Worth a listen.

is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.
