Greg Laswell

Greg Laswell came to my notice in “dramatic” fashion, his was the last song on the last episode of Numb3rs (it’s got geek jokes how could I not watch the show). When I checked out Greg Laswell’s Myspace site www.myspace.com/greglaswell, well I was rather blown away. There are some great songs here. “Sing Theresa Says” has become a particular favourite, the hypnotic and comfortably familiar guitar line and the razor sharp vocals just lift my day whenever it shows up on my MP3 player.
Greg plays nearly all the instruments and and produces his own material. He began by producing albums for a number of kindred spirits (several of which were released on his own Twenty Inch label) in the Long Beach area and fronting a series of bands that helped him hone his skills as a front man. While he spent years sticking to the party line that playing in a band was an all-for-one, one-for-all proposition, he came to the opposite conclusion a couple of years back …
“Ultimately, I began to realize that I was a singer-songwriter with a bunch of people behind me,” says Laswell. “I think that really came into focus when my last band went on a break. Once I got out on my own, playing solo, things opened up for me.”
Over at woxy.com > Lounge Acts there is an MP3 of a live gig he did and at the Vanguard Records website is Greg’s version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. He does a pretty good job of making it his own.
