Amon Tobin

Amon Tobin started making music back in the 90′s, the track I chose for today is “Reanimator” from his 1998 album “Permutation”. Head over to the MySpace site at www.myspace.com/tobinamon scroll down a bit inr the music display and you should find it there. OK it’s not very Chill but it is very good.

Tobin is perhaps best known for his amazing use of samples. He uses everything from robotics, animals, insects, musicians, utensils, motorbikes, the acoustics of buildings and about a thousand other things that made interesting noises then manipulates them often beyond recognition to create huge slabs of sound. Resonances, delays, reverbs and a wide variety of sound effects also contribute to transform what was once familiar into something new, exciting, twisted and well… pretty out here. Add to the textures and sounds, some interesting drums and polyrhythms and it’s a true delight.

I like this quote from an 2004 interview he gave the BBC…

“As far as interpreting my music goes, I’ve given up trying to work out what goes on in other people’s heads because most of the time that has nothing to do with my music anyway. Hopefully it’s dynamic enough to be understood in lots of different ways. But who can say where they get their ideas? Personally I think of frosted sugar lumps when I’m recording.”

The focus now has shifted from the source material altogether and placed squarely on the manipulation of sound regardless of it’s origin. Amon is continuing a tradition with a long history, musique-concrete composition, how cool it is for him to push the envelope of his music and yet still have it be accessible.

His websites are at www.myspace.com/tobinamon and Dont miss his site www.amontobin.com/ (this one is a ripper). Here you really get a feel for his vision. It will keep you entertained for hours.

Recommended.

is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
