I was chatting with my friend Bill today and he pointed out an article at Sideline about the music industry that I should read (he was paying me back for pointing out that he hadn’t read some stuff from last October).

In the article was this reference to Magne Furuholmen .

A-ha’s Magne Furuholmen just released a very special 10″ vinyl picture disc edition of his new album, “A Dot Of Black In The Blue Of Your Bliss” as an exclusive direct purchase from his website. Restricted to just 300 physical copies at a price of 100 euro, it sold out in pre-sales after a mere two days.

I popped open a screen curious to see what it sounded like. The short answer is “pretty damn good”. I have had the six tracks at http://www.myspace.com/magnef on all day. Just looping round and round. It’s really surprising stuff. I finally remembered to log into MySpace and download them (this was probably a good thought to have had several hundred meg of bandwidth ago)

The standout track so far is the title track “A Dot Of Black In The Blue Of Your Bliss“, the gritty electronic bass complements the gritty lyrics. This song has been lovingly and carefully assembled. I really like the production.

Running Out Of Reasons” reminds me of something that Penguin Caf‚ Orchestra might have done. It’s the guitar line that captivates me. This is another good one.

Lets just save a lot of typing and say go to at http://www.myspace.com/magnef and have a listen for yourself.

For those of you curious about where he came from, for around years he has been A-ha’s keyboard player and guitarist (I must admit I was surprised to find that A-ha is still gigging today), co-written many of the bands hits with Guitarist Pal Waaktaar. Including “Take on Me” which had what is still a damn cool video clip (Michael Patterson was the director).

Thanks to You Tube here is a copy of Magne and A-ha live in Germany last year…

Magne F is highly recommended.

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
