Fiddlers’ Bid

Jools and I first saw Fiddlers’ Bid in Glasgow in 2000, they were playing at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ‘Glasgow Fiddle Workshop’. They were staggeringly good. Our next run in was in 2001 when they were plaving at the Melbourne Concert Hall. Again they were staggeringly good. To find out how good, head over to www.myspace.com/fiddlersbid and have a listen. It doesn’t really matter which track you choose, but one of my faves is the “Troila Knowe Set” and the rest are all equally as impressive.

Fiddlers Bid are from Shetland and the band consists of four fiddles and a Scottish Harp (Catriona also plays piano), they rope in a guitarist and bass player and that’s it (doesn’t really need much else does it?). Here is some hype from the site…

Since their formation in 1991, the “flying fiddles and furious talent” of Fiddlers Bid have astounded audiences all over the world with their expressive, high energy music and performance. “Beware: Fiddlers Bid is infectious and habit-forming.”

Well I can personally testify to the “astounded and habit forming part” I usually have a track or two somewhere on the MP3 playlist. There are some 30 second samples on their webpage but the real gem is to be found at Troila Knowe Set It was recorded at  the Clickimin Centre, Shetland in 2005.

Highly Recommended (and habit forming)
