Sasha Dobson – Modern Romance
By thatch • Apr 3rd, 2008 • Category: Acoustic, Folk, Indie, Jazz, Music
I spotted the name Sasha Dobson in a recent New York Times article and was intrigued by the combination of Folk and Jazz. A quick rummage through http://www.myspace.com/sashadobson turned up a killer track called “Modern Romance“. A gentle and almost whimsical piece, the vocal treatments remind me of “1234″ by Leslie Feist. Really nice guitars as well.
The rest of the material available swings between some interesting jazz pieces and more pop oriented songs. Her band is to die for, have a listen to “Mood Indigo”, this one is so understated that you almost don’t notice the band playing. Really nice work.
Some background from her site…
Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Sasha Dobson began singing w/ her family professionally by the age of 12. Daughter to the late great jazz pianist and singer Smith Dobson, and jazz vocalist Gail Dobson. It was they who truly gave Sasha her first break! Sasha 28, resides in Brooklyn. Performing in NYC, through out the States and JapanHer debut album, Modern Romance, a fusion of Brazilian groove/pop/jazz/American songbook.
Jesse Harris and Richard Julian co-produced as well as contributed guitar work and songwriting. Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Willie Nelson) plays electric bass and Mauro Refosco (Bebel Gilberto, David Byrne) percussion.
Killer band, great vocals, interesting production and Highly Reccomended
