New Buffalo

Last September, Thatch did a post on the Canadian band Feist. In particular he wrote about the song “1234″ that has been heard everywhere on everything. The song was written by today’s featured artist – Melbourne based Australian singer / songwriter / producer Sally Seltmann also known as New Buffalo. I hasten to add that Leslie Feist contributed some lyrics too.

Sally Seltmann churns out these delicious little hypnotic pop tunes like the wistful “I’ve Got You and You’ve Got Me” taken from her 2004 release ‘The Last Beautiful Day’.

Follow that with “Cheer Me Up Thank You” from her 2007 release “Somewhere, Anywhere” and you have a fairly good idea of where this musician takes you. Here are places unvisited before, full of charm and emotion. Not your run of the mill pop songs – something a little bit different.

While Sally plays most of the instruments on ‘Somewhere, anywhere’, a few guests join her for the ride, including her husband Darren Seltmann of The Avalanches, Kellie Sutherland from Architecture in Helsinki, Dale Packard from Ground Components and John Lee of Mountains in the Sky.

‘Somewhere, anywhere’ was mixed and mastered by Franc Tetaz, composer of the score for the cult Australian film Wolf Creek, and the upcoming film, Rogue.

Last month ’Somewhere, Anywhere’ won the Australian Music Prize/MySpace Award and I hope this means she will be able to reach a wider audience. It’s funny how she is making a name for herself overseas and while here, she is still not widely known. She may be a little fey for some – but persevere – it’s worth it.
