Film School – Two Kinds

Film School

Layers of melodies, lots of guitar and BIG washes of sound. That’s what stopped me cold the first time I heard Film School. The track that did was “Two Kinds” (you can hear it at http://www.myspace.com/filmschool), for all the “bigness” it’s a wonderfully and delicately constructed piece of work.

The band fired up in the late Nineties and began life as a group of like-minded San Francisco musicians writing and producing music by themselves for themselves. The result was unrestrained guitars and loud driven drumbeats and when Film School ups the tempo, their layers of guitars guitars and harmonies remind me of the Sixties music I grew up on. The band has had personnel changes over time and is currently Krayg Burton (vocals/guitar), Nyles Lannon (guitar/vocals), Justin LaBo (bass), Donny Newenhouse (drums) and Jason Ruck (keyboards).

This is music that demands your attention, which can be a bit of a problem if you are walking down the street with your MP3 player turned up and you aren’t sure if the lights are trying to tell you something (STOP?) or just getting into the vibe. This is the same reason I rarely have Pink Floyd on a play list while I am walking. Dangerous.Highly infectious and Highly Recommended

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
