Explosions In the Sky

“Explosions In the Sky“. Now I ask you, isn’t that just the coolest band name you have heard for ages. It conjures up (in my mind at least), wonderful images and the Mythbusters… but that would be me.
Even better is that there are three guitars (yes folks that’s three guitars) and drums. That’s it. None of those messy word/vocal things that always seem to get in the way of the yummy guitar bits. And these guys have some wonderful yummy guitar bits.
Welcome Ghosts is from their 2007 album “All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone”. Cascades of guitars ( although one of them has snuck in a bass), the guitar lines will transport you away. I just can’t tell you how much I like these guys. Just as you think “Oh Yes” they will turn left and head off in a totally unexpected direction. There are dynamics, there is light and shade, there are bits that remind me of Jose Gonzalez/ and then it will be Phish and then it will be King Crimson. It’s just wonderful.
NPR has a live performance you can listen to over at www.npr.org/ and there are some fan recordings over at the Internet Archive
Glorious, echoing, layers of guitars and flubby kick drums, this could be heaven… Highly Recommended (even if you don’t get the whole guitar obsession thing).
