Spoon – The Ghost Of You Lingers

Spoon are from Texas and are another band that don’t fit my preconceived notion of what Texas band should sound like. Their song “The Ghost Of You Lingers” is an awesome case in point. This songs content is really sparse, it’s basically a piano and a voice and a ton of reverb and processing. No guitar, no percussion, not much else at all really. The are echoes of the kind of music that Juliana Barwick is doing
And like Juliana’s music this piece really stretches your imagination as you wonder is what you hearing coming through the speakers or are you making up stuff to plug the holes that they leave. OK, it’s not really a pop song, it probably belongs at the minimalist/sound poem end of your collection. But I think you should have it in your collection.
It’s disorientating and tense and all the more so if you have heard any of Spoon’s other material. They are a really interesting indie band that sound more English than American to me. If you haven’t heard them before head to http://www.myspace.com/spoon or http://www.spoontheband.com/ and have a listen.
“The Ghost Of You Lingers” is outside of their normal space but I found that like the title my memory of it lingered. They were out here in Australia earlier in the year for the Big Day Out gigs and went down a treat.
