Dan Sultan
By jools • Jul 7th, 2008 • Category: Australian, Indie, Music, RockDamn I’m going to have to invest even more time on this gig because the number of musicians and acts to be duggup just keeps on expanding.

Dan Sultan is another one I’d missed. He is a 23 year old indigenous singer and songwriter, but in reality he is only half the act, because he collaborates with guitarist Scott Wlson. Together they wrote and released “Homemade Biscuits” in 2006. The album is deserving of much more support from Australian radio.
In an article by Joel Gibson of the Sidney Morning Herald Dan Sultan says, “The music is political even where it doesn’t mean to be. “I write love songs but unfortunately because we live in the country we live in with the history we have, for me to write a song about a boy and a girl who fall in love and the boy being hanged because the family doesn’t approve of him, that’s a political song. I haven’t got a criminal record and unfortunately that’s a political statement in itself.”
Arising from relative obscurity to win the 2007 Deadly Award for best single, he was then taken under the wing of one of Australia’s most recognised and respected songwriters, Paul Kelly whose influence can be heard in this uniquely Australian sounding album. I’m not talking about didgeridoos and clapsticks but that definitive sound that identifies this album as having been produced on our shores and nowhere else.
Dan Sultan (lead vocals, guitar, tamborine) Scott Wilson (guitar, vocals) Jarrod Ross ( bass guitar) Peter Marin ( drums, vocals ) Gina Woods ( keyboards ) Ben Veale ( trumpet ) Steve Veale ( trombone)
Right now the lads are touring Ireland but will return to to play at the Brisbane festival later this month.
Find out more at his website and you’ll find a copy of the song he wrote for Roslyn his grandmother and yes there is a MySpace site where you can hear the fabulous “Lonesome Tears”.
The video has been withdrawn - bummer I’ll try to replace it - meanwhile here is “The Door Is Still Open To My Heart” by Dan Sultan and band.
jools is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.
