Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene are a Juno Award winning Canadian indie rock supergroup, a musical collective currently including nineteen members, formed in 1999 and debuted at the Wavelength Music + Arts Series in 2000 in Toronto, Ontario. All of its members currently play in various other groups and solo projects, mainly based around the city of Toronto. The group’s sound could be considered a combination of all of its members’ respective musical projects, and is usually identified as baroque pop. It is characterized by a very large number of sounds, grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins, unusual song structures, and an experimental, and sometimes chaotic production style from David Newfeld.

BUT what that paragraph doesn’t tell you is that they are amazing. This band chews through more musical ideas in one song than you will find in an entire season of Idol. Head over to http://www.myspace.com/brokensocialscene and pick a song, any song. The track I found first was ‘Superconnected”. This is a huge wall of sound, instruments rise to the surface for a few notes and then vanish to be replaced by something new. Cluttered, chaotic and just wonderful. . Guitars, voices, silly noises, we have the lot here. Next try “Hit The Wall”, a tad more accessible… maybe.

I really like this band and what they are doing. Highly Recommended

thatch is fascinated by guitars, music, guitars, production, silly noises, guitars and used to be a musician. Did I mention the thing about the guitars?
