Stars Like Fleas – Karma’s Hoax

Today’s band, ”
Stars Like Fleas” (self-described ‘electroacoustic, comprovised free-folk torch-song collective’) is another one of those I like to class as “hard listening”. A lot of people will just hear noise and chaos BUT there is a lot going on here.
This is a band who luxuriate in experimental pop music. They juxtapose elegant melodies with what some might class total cacophony. Let’s hace a look at “Karma’s Hoax”, the music in places sounds like Ligeti and in other places like a gentle and sublime piece of pop such as you would find on an early Pink Floyd album. Head over to www.myspace.com/starslikefleas and have a listen or two or three. It might take a while but I really like them .
I first heard then on Stars Like Fleas: ‘You Are My Memoir’ : NPR Music. Here is some of what they had to say…
Shannon Fields, who co-founded the group with Montgomery Knott, says the group’s bi-polar sound is by design. “Whenever we find ourselves settling into our influences or natural impulses, live and on record, self-sabotage is usually not far behind,” he explains. “What we try to do is throw out the road map, and sometimes obscure the road map intentionally.”
Not an easy band to get into but really worth ionvesting the time. Highly recommended (go on take a risk… you know you want to)
