Regina Spektor has several albums out and you may well not know why this makes me happy. Let’s just say that I really love listening to this musicians songs. The songs are fresh, lyrical and the feeling is playful.

Her songs are little capsules of eccentricity – tales to delight and tunes that take their inspiration from the many and varied influences in her life. She embellishes her performances with flourishes of sound.

Born in Russia she emigrated with her musical parents to America at the age of nine. Raised in the Bronx, she made a name for herself in the East Village area of New York.

Known as a singer, songwriter, pianist and record producer, originally she self produced her music and released it into the wild of the Internet. These days she is signed to a major but she retains the magic.

Here is “Better” from her 2006 release “Begin to Hope”:

Wikipedia says of this album:

Begin to Hope is the fourth album by Regina Spektor. It was released June 13, 2006. The album debuted at number 70 on the Billboard 200, but due to the popularity of the single “Fidelity” the album rose to number 20 and was labeled a “pace setter” by Billboard. Rolling Stone magazine named it the 21st-best album of 2006.

More of her material is available on www.myspace.com/reginaspektor and at her website www.reginaspektor.com. There are heaps of videos of her performing her songs on YouTube. Puzzle your way through her lyrics and appreciate the joy of her songwriting.

is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.
