king tebbutt & whistler – TV Screens

king tebbutt & whistler are an indie pop group from Melbourne. I stumbled over them while looking at who was playing at Manchester Lane (a Melbourne Jazz venue). There are only two tracks currently available at www.myspace.com/kingtebbuttandwhistler but the track “TV Screens ” is an absolute winner
I love the way they get the vocal parts to work with the wonderfully sparse guitar parts that gently move the song along. The production and the arrangement are all there to enhance the harmony work and then to prove that it isn’t a fluke they give us more of the same high standard on “Japanese Boy”.
Moving from their home on the South Coast of NSW, Jesse Whistler (vocals) and Amanda King (vocals) met Dustin Tebbutt (guitar) while studying music in Sydney and an instant musical connection was found. (They have since added Patrick Lundin on drums)
The Indie trio combines an eclectic mix of genres and techniques, borrowing elements from jazz, blues, pop and folk. You’ll have trouble confining King Tebbutt & Whistler’s sound to one genre… the band create their music open-mindedly and allow themselves to be influenced freely.

Gigging at Manchester Lane here in Melbourne on the 4th September 2008 (8:00 PM start), it strikes me as being an interesting evening.
