Moving Hearts – RTE The Late Session
By thatch • Aug 21st, 2008 • Category: Folk, Music, Rock
More from RTE Radio 1 in Ireland and their “In Concert” series. The subject is Moving Hearts. One of the bands that literally changed my mind about the possibilities inherent in folk music. There are three bands that have messed up my head in the folk genre. “Fairport Convention”, “Steeleye Span” and “Moving Hearts”. I can still remember the first time I heard all of these band’s recording and in every case I knew that nothing would ever be the same again. That sound awfully pretentious but it’s true none the less.
There are lot’s of bands that have done this and the really really cool thing is that one of them was as recent as a week or two ago (no I am not going to tell you… have a look back and take a guess.) I digress… we are here to chat about Moving Hearts.
Moving Hearts fired up in 1981. The group was formed when Dónal Lunny (bouzouki) and Christy Moore (vocals and bodhran) of Planxty wanted to explore the possibilities of linking contemporary music to Irish traditional music. Like Horslips who went before them they were mashing up Irish trad with rock , and putting a few jazz elements to round the mix out.
Lunny and Moore initially intended to form a trio with guitarist Declan Sinnott, but then expanded the group to include established Irish musicians Keith Donald (alto sax), Eoghan O’Neill (bass), and Brian Calnan (drums), and prodigious newcomer Davy Spillane (uilleann pipes).
The group ceased touring in 1984, but in 2007 the band reformed, announcing concerts in Dublin and at the Hebridean Celtic Festival in Stornoway. The line up was Dónal Lunny, Davy Spillane, Eoghan O’Neill, Keith Donald, Matt Kellaghan, Noel Eccles, Anto Drennan, Kevin Glackin and Graham Henderson.
RTE recorded one of the bands performances and I got excited all over again. You really need to hear this band play live (if they are ever playing within a hundred miles of you, just go), and you to do that you will need to have Real Audio installed to listen to the concert , but it’s worth it.
