Emiliana Torrini – Gun

Rummaging through Amie Street the other week I discovered Emiliana Torrini and her song “Me and Armini”, which I find reminds me of the rhythm from “I Don’t Like Cricket” by 10cc (don’t worry about it too much… this is definitely just me). It has that same sleazy white reggae feel to it… I love it.
But the song that really hooked me is a track called “Gun”. It’s huge guitar sound is just glorious and the games Emiliana plays with her vocals are electrifying. The production is a collaboration between Emiliana Torrini and Dan Carey, full of little details that catch your ear on the third, fourth, fifteenth listen through, it is just perfect. On top of that there is a sense of controlled menace lurking just below the surface and it draws you in. This would make an absolute killer soundtrack for William Gibson’s book “Spook Country”, it has all the same elements and plugs you into the same places.
“Big Jumps” is another terrific track from the material over at www.myspace.com/emilianatorrini
Here is some hype from the website about it…
Emilíana cheerfully describes being sat with a friend in a cemetery in Nice, staring at the gravestones and huge epitaphs; “these beautiful angels and tombstones, how silly – that’s all life comes to. People really want to believe there is something more, it makes them lazy about the moment.” ‘Big Jumps’ is about taking those chances – chiming guitar and delicate synth swooshes, combine with Emilíana’s yearning voice to unforgettable effect.
To give you an idea of just how varied her musical interests are here is a video from YouTube of her song “Sunny Road”…
As you listen to the rest of her tracks you realise just how versatile and eclectic her talent and taste are. This is seriously good stuff.
Highly recommended.
