Every so often I delve into the world of “post-rock”, mainly because I haven’t a clue what it is as a genre. To me it’s sounds just like music I have been listening to ever since well.. I started listening to music.

Anyway today’s find is a local band (well local if you live in Melbourne) called Because of Ghosts. They are a three piece outfit of guitar, bass and drums who have just released their new album. called “This Culture of Background Noise”.

There are some similarities with Caverns (we have been listening to them this month as well, it’s quite strange when they appear on the MP3 sequentially… but I digress); again we have no lyrics, no vocalist, no catchy hooks and again it’s intriguing and engaging music.

Let’s face it, I am a sucker for guitar and performance. I have to tell you I have had a ball with this bands stuff. Raw guitar sounds and incredibly textural spaces. It’s the space that they leave between the notes that make this stuff so good to listen to. The drum sound just like real drums should, air and space all around them and again it’s the space between the beats that is where the interest is.

Maybe that’s what post-rock is, music that is more concerned with the space between the notes rather than the notes themselves. Interesting thought that one. Check out “Canadia” over at www.myspace.com/becauseofghostsband from the opening strings to the final chord it is a fascinating and in places emotional ride. This one is a keeper.

Here is one of the many videos that are over at their site…

If you are in Melbourne, the band are doing their album launch at the East Brunswick Club Saturday
18 October. Well worth a look.

Highly Recommended.
