Abalone Dots

I heard “Solo” by the Swedish four piece country band Abalone Dots and had to let you know about them. Four talented women with voices that remind me of the Dixie Chicks meet Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Have a listen.

Abalone Dots – Solo

I’m not a big country fan, but as always I’m partial to good music and this is just heartbreaking. Upright bass, cello, violin and guitar make up the lineup – coupled with four part harmonies and throw in banjo and mandolin – just glorious.

The songs for the current album, according to their bio were written the day before they were recorded. Rebecka Hjukström, Louise Holmer, Elin and Sophia Hogman, play a special mix of bluegrass, country and American folk music.

It’s no wonder then that they’ve been snapped up by major label RCA and while they haven’t topped the Swedish charts they have done well nevertheless. Hear 6 tracks on their MySpace site and to hear their music on the Abalone Dots website you need to have Flash 8 or better installed. As you can guess, recommended.

is a graphic designer who used to front a band on vocals and bass. All evidence of which have mercifully been obliterated or otherwise lost.

  1. They are definitely really good! I only recently discovered them when they were announced to be playing in Sweden’s Melodifestivalen, but I’ve been playing their two albums all the time. Elin’s left the band, so I wonder how that will affect their sound now – I know that they’re going to be doing some new material in Swedish for one thing!

I profiled them earlier this week on my blog: fromanothercountry.blogspot.com/2011/12/artist-profile-abalone-dots-sweden.html
